How to Rotate Pages in a PDF

A practical guide to permanently rotating individual pages or all pages in a PDF document using Adobe Acrobat — and making sure the rotation is saved correctly.

Why Page Rotation Matters

PDF documents frequently contain pages that are oriented incorrectly. This typically happens when paper documents are scanned and the physical pages were placed in the scanner at the wrong angle — a common problem when processing mixed batches of documents where some pages are portrait and others landscape. It also arises when a PDF is assembled from multiple source files with different default orientations, or when a landscape diagram, spreadsheet, or drawing is inserted into an otherwise portrait document without adjusting the page orientation.

Viewing a page rotated 90 degrees is uncomfortable and slows down reading. For documents shared with clients, submitted as formal deliverables, or archived for compliance purposes, misoriented pages are a quality issue. Adobe Acrobat Pro lets you correct page rotation quickly, and — critically — lets you save that rotation permanently into the file so it displays correctly in any PDF viewer.

Temporary Display Rotation vs. Permanent Rotation

It is worth understanding the distinction between these two before making changes.

Temporary display rotation is the view rotation applied through the View menu in Acrobat (View > Rotate View > Clockwise or Counterclockwise). This rotates the on-screen display for your current session only. It does not change the file, and the rotation is not saved when you close the document. Anyone else opening the same file will see the original orientation.

Permanent rotation modifies the page rotation value stored in the PDF file itself. This is what you need when the goal is to fix the orientation for all viewers. Permanent rotation is applied through the Organize Pages panel, as described below.

Rotating Pages Using the Organize Pages Panel

The Organize Pages panel is the correct tool for making permanent rotation changes in Adobe Acrobat.

  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  2. Go to Tools > Organize Pages. The page thumbnails for the entire document will be displayed.
  3. To rotate a single page, click its thumbnail to select it. Rotation buttons — clockwise (90° right) and counterclockwise (90° left) — appear in the toolbar above the thumbnails. Click the appropriate button.
  4. To rotate multiple specific pages, hold Ctrl and click each thumbnail you want to rotate, then click the rotation button. All selected pages will rotate together.
  5. To rotate all pages, press Ctrl+A to select all thumbnails, then click the rotation button.

Pages can only be rotated in 90-degree increments: 90° clockwise, 90° counterclockwise, or 180° (apply 90° twice). There is no facility to rotate a page by an arbitrary angle using the standard Acrobat tools — for that level of control, you would need to edit the page content using specialist tools.

Using the Rotate Pages Dialog for More Control

For greater precision — particularly when rotating pages based on their current orientation — use the Rotate Pages dialog accessed from the Organize Pages toolbar via More > Rotate, or from the menu bar at Page > Rotate Pages (in older Acrobat versions). This dialog allows you to:

  • Specify the direction and degree of rotation (90° clockwise, 90° counterclockwise, or 180°).
  • Apply rotation to a specific page range (e.g., pages 3 to 7 only).
  • Filter rotation to apply only to pages that are currently portrait, landscape, or both — useful when you want to standardise a mixed-orientation document.

Saving the Rotation

After rotating pages, save the file to preserve the changes. Use File > Save (Ctrl+S) to overwrite the existing file, or File > Save As to create a new file with the corrected orientations. Do not simply close the document — if prompted, choose to save changes.

Once saved, the rotation is embedded in the PDF and will be displayed correctly in Adobe Acrobat Reader, web browsers, and any other conforming PDF viewer.

Rotating Pages During PDF Creation

Correcting rotation at the point of creation is preferable to fixing it afterwards.

Scanning settings: When scanning to PDF, most scanner software offers an automatic orientation detection feature that uses OCR to detect text direction and rotate pages accordingly. Enabling this setting eliminates the majority of rotation errors in scanned documents. Alternatively, ensure pages are loaded consistently in the scanner feeder.

Print to PDF settings: When printing to the Adobe PDF printer from an application, verify that the page orientation in the print dialog matches the document orientation. Mismatches here are a common cause of landscape pages appearing rotated in the output PDF.

Source document orientation: For documents created in Word, Excel, or similar applications, set the page orientation correctly in the source before converting to PDF. Correcting orientation before conversion is always faster and cleaner than correcting it after the fact.
